Models Own Northern Lights Review & Swatch

This is definitely my new favourite nail polish. I have had this pretty much since the moment Models Own brought out the Wonderland Collection as I immediately knew I had to have it as soon as I saw it. I used to avoid using glitter polishes as I hated how much of a pain they were to remove - I still hate how much of a pain they are to remove, but the prettiness of them outweighs that!

 

Anyway so Northern Lights is a pink coloured, holographic glitter polish. The glitter particles are all the same, small size. I actually thought this would be quite a sheer coverage, and imagined it being almost a topcoat, but in fact it's quite dense, and I think it would cover most of your base colour if you were to use it as a topcoat!

I think this polish is absolutely stunning. The swatches above show 3 coats, which is perfect for full opacity. In natural light, it just looks like a simple pink glitter which is lovely, but it really comes to life in the sunlight. When the sun hits it, you get a whole rainbow of colours!

 

As is usual with Models Own, the polish is really good quality and has a nice consistency. I find the Models Own glitters have a thicker consistency than their normal polishes, but they are by no means difficult to work with. This also dries really quickly as well which is a bonus!

 

If you prefer a smooth finish it does take around 2 coats of topcoat to do so, and with a topcoat I find there is minimal chipping, even after a few days. I think this wears really well for a glitter polish.

 

The only bad thing I can find to say about this is that it STINKS. It smells like nail polish (obv) but it's really, really strong! I find this with all Models Own polishes, I don't know why, but even that doesn't put me off them!

Models Own Mirrorball Collection Swatches

Hey everyone

If you've seen my wishlist post from Monday, you will know that I had my eye on the Models Own Mirrorball nail polish collection. I was just browsing through the Models Own website on Tuesday and couldn't stop myself from ordering these!

Freak Out

 

 

Freak Out is described by Models Own as "a crystal shimmer mix of blue and purple". It contains aqua blue glitter shards, dark blue glitter circles and purple micro glitter.

 

 

 

Hot Stuff

 

 

Hot Stuff is described by Models Own as "an intoxicating mix of pink and gold sparkles". It contains holographic glitter shards, gold glitter squares, pink glitter shards and magenta micro glitter.

 

 

 

Boogie Nights

 

 

Boogie Nights is described by Models Own as "a multicoloured mix of intriguing purple, pink and blue". It contains lilac glitter shards, dark blue glitter circles, purple glitter circles and purple micro glitter.

 

 

 

Disco Inferno

 

 

Disco Inferno is desribed by Models Own as "a glittery gold disco bomb". It contains gold glitter shards, copper coloured glitter circles, gold micro glitter and green glitter.

 

 

 

Dancing Queen

 

 

Dancing Queen is described by Models Own as "fabulous flecks of emerald, blue and gold". It contains blue glitter shards, gold micro glitter, gold glitter circles, blue glitter circles and green glitter circles.

 

 

They are all 'chunky glitters' which in effect means that instead of applying them like a normal nail polish, you have to sort of dab them on otherwise the glitter just won't stay on your nail.

As you can see, they are not the most dense of glitters, and they would probably look better over a solid base colour, but I think they're pretty cool. The combination of colours in each polish is unique and interesting. I really like how there are lots of different sizes of glitter rather than just a multicoloured glitter, as I think it makes the polish even more interesting. I can't comment on wear time/drying time because I only swatched them, but I am looking forward to experimenting with different base colours! :)

My 5 Favourite Nail Polishes

I'm not really in the mood today to do a product review or anything like that, so I thought I'd share with you my top 5 nail polishes. They are all 'drugstore' brands, as I don't feel I can justify spending over £10 on a bottle of nail polish, so these ones are all under £5. Just to warn you, this post will be picture heavy!

#1. Barry M 'Blue Glitter'

This is probably my favourite polish ever, but I do neglect it as it's quite difficult to remove! Barry M is my all-time favourite brand for nail polish, I think they're so affordable, and most of the time they are amazing quality. I own a LOT of Barry M polishes, and I think the only one I don't really like is 'Mint Green' - I love the colour but I find the formula horrible to work with, and it takes so long to dry! Blue Glitter is a really uninspiring name, but the polish is gorheous. The glitter particles are only small, but they are so dense that it is easy to get an opaque layer in 2 coats.

#2. GOSH 'Flamingo'

I don't really like GOSH nail polishes much. I don't own that many but of the ones I do own, this is the only one I like. However, this is really good so I guess it makes up for all the bad ones (no?). It's a really bright, summery pink and the formula is amazing. It's really easy to work with and lasts for absolutely ages with barely any wear and tear. This is one of my go-to pink nail polishes and I will definately repurchase this when it runs out.

#3.  Barry M 'Berry Ice Cream'

You can tell this one is loved cause the name's worn off! haha. This is a shade a lot of you are likely to have seen before. It's very popular at the minute as it's a pastel shade which is on-trend this spring/summer. This is actually my 2nd bottle of this, I bought my 1st ages and ages ago and absolutely loved it so I soon ran out. This is a pastel lilac colour, which is a part of the Ice Cream collection from Barry M. Whenever I don't know what to do with my nails, this is always the colour I paint them. The formula is wasy to work with, and you can even get away with just one coat with this colour.

#4. Models Own 'Indian Ocean'

I have only recently discovered Models Own, but this shade has fast become one of my favourites. It is a very sheer baby blue colour, which flashes pink in the light. Because it is so sheer, it takes about 4 coats to get it opaque by itself, and for this reason, I tend to wear it as a top coat. It transforms a plain colour into a duochrome, shimmery one. It looks absolutely stunning over Berry Ice Cream.

#5. Barry M 'Pink Flamingo'

This is another shade that is quite well-known. It is a coral toned pink, which is quite bright when applied to the nails. The formula is typical of Barry M - very easy to work with and fast drying. It's the perfect shade for summer, and another one I will always go-to when the sun comes out.

New Models Own Polishes

After waiting with much anticipation for these babies, they finally arrived this morning!

L-R, Ibiza Mix, Indian Ocean and Tropical Sun

Ibiza Mix is from the new Hed Kandi collection which if I'm not mistaken, is made up of 5 polishes - 3 neons and 2 glitters. Ibiza mix is a clear base packed full of different sized glitters in so many different colours - mainly blue, green, gold and lilac. I haven't swatched this yet but will report back when I do as I'm pretty excited!

Indian Ocean is one of Models Own's new additions to the Beetlejuice collection. It's a light blue colour with a pink shimmer, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Be warned though, it is VERY sheer, and will require about 4-5 coats for full opacity. i find it best to layer it over a light purple or light blue. This is the only one of these polishes I have actually swatched so I will put that at the end of this post :)

Tropical Sun is another one from the Beetlejuice collection, and is an orangey, almost coral colour with flecks of tiny silver glitter. It is literally like summer in a bottle! The beetleuice collection was originally marketed I think as a collection of duochromes? Now, Indian Ocean and Tropical Sun aren't as much of a duochrome as the older beetlejuice collection and I technically wouldn't label these as duochromes but I suppose some might.

Now, I tried Indian Ocean this morning, and I can not stop staring at my nails! I think I'm in love.

This is a poor picture which doesn't do this polish justice at all, sorry. But this is 2 coats of Indian Ocean over 1 coat of 17 Lasting Fix in "Heart Beat" which is a baby blue colour. In terms of application, this polish was amazing. It applied smoothly and dried extremely quickly. The formula was quite runny but still easy to work with. The brush was also good, which is usual for Models Own polishes. The only negative thing about this is the sheerness of it. I personally hate layering tons of polish on my nails so would avoid trying to make it opaque on it's own. However, you could try this over a lilac or even coral, and actually I've seen some swatches online where this is over black, which also looks fab.

The colour overall is super pretty, summery and girly. I absolutely love it, and Models Own is fast becoming one of my favourite nail polish brands.
